Introduction
The Society was formed in 1919, originally for local allotment holders. Nowadays, the Society welcomes anyone who is interested in gardening of any sort.
Membership is just £7 per household per annum and for that the EHS:
- Runs a Distribution Hut at Washington Road Allotments. Open every Sunday morning 10.00 to 12.00, members can buy their garden supplies at very competitive prices, with many below those available elsewhere.
- Organises the Horticultural Marquee at the Emsworth Show. Held on August Bank Holiday Monday, this has been called “The Biggest Little Show in the South” & attracts thousands of visitors.
- Arranges trips to local gardens & places of horticultural interest.
- Provides regular monthly talks, free to all members.
- Organises regular Members Open Gardens, so members have a chance to visit other members’ gardens; get ideas, chat to other members with tea or coffee
- Runs two annual plant sales – at the Hut & at the Show.
- Arranges member social events such as the Summer Party, Volunteers Evening, Quiz Night, New Members Gathering
