We moved to Newells House some 11 years ago and the garden had been set to be low maintenance at that time. I happened to come across a local gentleman who turned out to be the original gardener here and he gave me some photos and advice telling me how the garden was originally open to the public. Over the next few years I set about adding back in some of the details of the original garden and also adding a few of my own, all under the watchful eye of of Dick. This is very much a work in progress and, unfortunately, my mentor gardener has now passed away but I still hear his words when I am working in the garden. Don’t plant that there, it won’t like it. If it’s not happy, move it. and other such words.
We are very much linked to Cutmill House in that we have the original mill pond which turned the water wheel in days gone by. Of course, that has all changed since the 1920’s when the mill was converted to a house. Newells House was built as the coach house and overflow guest house for the ‘big’ house before being sold off as a separate dwelling.
We renovated the mill pond more recently removing over 200 tractor loads of silt and taking it back to its original depth, rebuilding the sluice gate so we have better control of the water level in this area. Everything was done under the watchful eye of the local council and environment agency and all plants had to be removed and stored prior to the draining of the mill pond and put back once the work was completed. It is now a wildlife haven and is a joy to see.
We hope you enjoy seeing what is here as much as we enjoy living here.
