Thursday 11th September
Coach trip to the Sculpture by the Lakes in Pallington, Nr Dorchester followed by a visit to the charming St Nicholas Church in Moreton.
Cost will be £36.50.
Sculpture by the Lakes
This is a beautiful 26 acre botanic garden set around lakes and the river Frome which gives a tranquil oasis to enjoy a symmetry of nature and art. There are about 120 sculptures, many by the owner Simon Gudgeon, and they complement the setting so well. It is one of the eight UK botanic gardens.
It is a lovely example of how nature and art can combine, the focus being on conservation of unusual trees and shrubs. The owner took it over in 2007, when over 1,000 trees and shrubs were planted.
The walk is quite level and paths are well maintained. The kitchen garden is well worth visiting too.
There is a very nice café for coffee or lunch, a fine gallery where you can see further works of art, and the Makers’ Yard to visit and maybe even purchase some special items?
You are very welcome to bring a picnic for lunch as there are many pleasant seating areas around the lakes.
From here we will visit St Nicholas Church in Moreton, about 10 mins away. It is a very lovely historic church and a short talk is available to us. In the graveyard is the grave of T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia).
The cost to include: the coach travel by Westrings, entry to the Sculpture Lakes on a group ticket, short talk at the church, and driver’s tip is £36.50.
Bookings will open 23rd June!
N.B. Some members have already expressed an interest which is great, but remember you will still need to make a firm booking.
